Palm Plaza Is Where Port Aransas's Live Music Weekend Actually Starts

Most of Beachtober happens somewhere else. The taco trail runs through restaurants scattered across the island, the dessert trail loops through bakeries downtown, and Shoptober pulls foot traffic into the boutiques near Alister Street. But the one night that actually opens the whole month, the Friday show that kicks off Port Aransas's Live Music Weekend, doesn't happen downtown at all. It happens on Palmilla Beach's own pavement, at Palm Plaza, before anyone else in town has plugged in an amp.

If you live inside the gate, that's worth knowing, because it means the biggest music weekend on the island's calendar treats your neighborhood as the starting line, not a side stop on the way to somewhere better.

The Home Court Advantage Nobody Advertises

Port Aransas's Live Music Weekend is built as a relay. According to the city's own event listing, the weekend kicks off with a Landsharks concert, a Jimmy Buffett tribute act that's become something of an institution for opening night, and from there the music moves bar to bar and restaurant to restaurant across the island for the rest of the weekend. The detail that gets lost in most write-ups of the weekend is where that first show actually happens: Palm Plaza, inside Palmilla Beach.

That means the resort isn't waiting for the concert calendar to come to it. Palm Plaza is the venue that everyone else's Friday night gets compared to. If you've ever wondered why golf carts start clustering near the plaza before the rest of the island seems to know anything's happening, that's why.

What's Already Built Around That Night

Palm Plaza doesn't sit alone. It's part of a small cluster of on-site spots that already carry the resort's evening traffic on an ordinary Friday, which is part of why the plaza works as a kickoff stage in the first place. The short list:

• REDS Patio Bar, tucked next to the golf shop, is the resort's own name for itself: an outdoor patio and bar that Palmilla's dining page calls the property's best-kept secret, with live music on Thursdays during the busier months.
• Black Marlin Seaside Grill sits right beside REDS and handles the resort's sit-down dinners, seafood and steaks mostly, for residents who want the short walk instead of the ferry line.
• Palmilla Beach Coffee covers the other end of the day, the pre-golf, pre-beach stretch before anything else on property has opened.
• The Oasis and Seaside Pool round out the daytime rhythm, with the swim-up bar at the Oasis doing double duty as an afternoon hangout before the evening crowd migrates toward Palm Plaza or REDS.

None of that is new information to anyone who already lives here. What's worth sitting with is that this cluster, plaza included, is dense enough and central enough that it can host the opening night of an island-wide event without residents needing to leave the property.

Why the Course Is Nine Holes, Not Eighteen

REDS calls itself the resort's 19th hole, which only makes sense if you know the course actually stops at nine. That's not the original design. Palmilla's links course opened in 2008, under the name Newport Dunes, as a full 18-hole layout designed by Arnold Palmer's studio, with holes four through six running along the beach and Gulf views that made it one of the few true links courses in Texas.

Hurricane Harvey ended that version of the course in August 2017. The storm's winds and flooding wrecked the greens, and rather than rebuild the original 18 holes, the resort's ownership brought in Troon Golf to redesign the layout from the ground up. The economics were part of the decision: the old course was drawing around 20,000 rounds a year and losing money, partly because the resort's ferry-and-bridge access made it harder to pull in the volume an 18-hole course needs to stay profitable. What came back was smaller and, by most accounts, more useful for the way people who actually live here play golf: a nine-hole course under 2,500 yards, plus a three-hole short course called the Loop, so a round can run two to three hours instead of eating most of a day.

That history is why REDS's nineteenth-hole branding works as a small joke rather than a stretch. The course you're finishing is nine holes, or nine holes played twice for eighteen if you're feeling ambitious. The bar waiting at the end has always known exactly what it's the nineteenth hole of.

Where the Rest of Beachtober Goes

Once that Friday kickoff show wraps at Palm Plaza, the rest of the month pulls in the opposite direction, out toward town. Port Aransas's Beachtober calendar for this year adds a weekly Friday concert series called Beachtober Beats, held at SipYard rather than on any single resort's grounds, alongside a set of month-long trails and events that all run from October 1 through the 31st.

Read the table left to right and the shape of the month becomes clear. Palmilla hosts the opening act. Everything after that asks residents to get in a cart or a car and go find it. That's not a complaint about the resort's amenities so much as a useful piece of planning information: if you're weighing whether to make the trip downtown on a given October Friday, know that the concert series has moved to SipYard this year, not to a stage closer to home.

Reading the Calendar From Your Own Porch

None of this changes what Palmilla already offers day to day. It just means the calendar this month runs in two directions at once: inward, toward Palm Plaza and REDS for the one night that matters most for bragging rights, and outward, toward SipYard and the rest of the island's trails and boutiques for everything after.

A few ways that plays out in practice:

1. If you only make it to one thing this month, the opening Friday at Palm Plaza costs you nothing but the walk or golf cart ride you're probably already taking to REDS anyway.
2. The Taco & Margarita Trail and Sweet Traditions Dessert Trail both run the full month, so there's no single weekend you have to protect on the calendar, just a running list to work through at whatever pace fits.
3. If Beachtober Beats at SipYard is the draw, plan for the drive. It's a different venue than the plaza show, and treating it as a separate outing rather than an extension of the same night avoids the mismatch.

The bigger point is simpler than a calendar, though. It's easy to think of a resort neighborhood as a place that hosts its own version of the town's bigger events, a scaled-down echo of what's really happening somewhere else.
