Rockport's Holiday Season Starts on Austin Street, Weeks Before the Beach Lights Come On

October 29, 2026

The Christmas on the Beach drive-thru opens its 2026 season on Sunday, December 6. Downtown starts sixteen days before that. On Friday, November 20, three things begin within a few blocks of each other. The Rockport Cultural Arts District starts Christmas in the District. Rockport Market Days opens its November weekend. Rockport Center for the Arts hosts a Grammy-nominated blues guitarist in its concert hall that night.

For an Islands of Rockport household, that changes the shape of the season. Most of what's planned between Thanksgiving and Christmas happens on Austin Street, and if you wait for December, you miss the first two and a half weeks of it.

Friday, November 20: Three Openings on One Day

Each of the three is run by a different organizer, and they happen to start on the same Friday.

  • Christmas in the District runs from November 20, 2026, through January 5, 2027. The Rockport Cultural Arts District lists the main Austin Street lighting, a Hallmark Christmas Tree lighting celebration, lighted holiday photo ops with a contest, and visits from Santa. Live music, a Kids Night with holiday crafts, Santa's Mailbox and holiday market events are also on its list.
  • Rockport Market Days runs November 20 through 22. That's 9 a.m. Friday through 4 p.m. Sunday at 100 Seabreeze. The organizer, ACM Texas, describes artists, crafters, food vendors and live entertainment.
  • Sue Foley, "One Guitar Woman," plays Rockport Center for the Arts at 204 South Austin Street, 7 to 9 p.m. The show is in the Randall Ewing Kemper Hall.

The district says Christmas in the District begins before November's Shop Small events. It wants the program to bring more people downtown and support local shops and restaurants. It also says a full schedule with dates and times is coming. Until then, the exact nights for the tree lighting, Santa and Kids Night are still open.

Why the Sue Foley show belongs on the calendar

Foley grew up in Ottawa and moved to Austin in her early twenties. There she signed with Antone's Records and released her debut, Young Girl Blues, in 1992. She won the Blues Music Award for Traditional Blues Female Artist five times between 2020 and 2025. Her latest album, One Guitar Woman: A Tribute to the Female Pioneers of Guitar, was nominated for the 2025 Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. It shows off her acoustic playing and pays tribute to Maybelle Carter, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ida Presti and Lydia Mendoza. Her bio also mentions a PhD in musicology from York University and a 2026 book, Guitar Women: Conversations with the Heroines of Guitar.

So the first night of Christmas in the District also brings a Texas blues show to a small hall on Austin Street. You can buy tickets through the art center.

The Art Center Runs Much of the Calendar From There

After opening night, much of the downtown season comes from one building. Rockport Center for the Arts has two exhibitions, three Friday concerts and six free Saturdays planned before Christmas. Here is its calendar alongside the other confirmed dates:

Date Event Where Cost
Sat., Nov. 7 Free Family Saturday Rockport Center for the Arts Free
Sat., Nov. 14 Free Family Saturday; "Standing Out" opening reception, 5–7 p.m. Rockport Center for the Arts Free

Dec. 18–20 Market Days, December weekend Rockport Market Days
Sat., Dec. 19 Free Family Saturday Rockport Center for the Arts Free

The exhibitions overlap. "Standing Out," the art center's 2026 Merit Artist show, opens November 14 and runs through January 3, 2027. "The Big Wave!," the all-members exhibition, opens November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, and runs through January 9, 2027. For most of December, both shows are up together. That gives visiting family a reason to walk through the galleries over Thanksgiving weekend and again at the holidays.

The concerts are spaced a week apart. Dale Watson plays Friday, December 4. The acoustic guitar duo Pulkingham Layne follows on Friday, December 11. All three concerts start at 7 p.m. at 204 South Austin Street, so the season gives you three Friday nights out downtown in four weeks.

December 12 Is the Fullest Day Downtown

Most of the calendar comes together on Saturday, December 12.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the art center's Free Family Saturday offers free gingerbread-house decorating. It's limited to the first 100 families, so if you have grandchildren in town, aim for the morning. That evening, from 5 to 7 p.m., the free reception for "The Big Wave!" coincides with the Austin Street Art Walk.

By then Christmas in the District has been running for more than three weeks, so the art walk falls in the middle of the district's holiday program. Christmas on the Beach will have been lit for six nights. You could fill a whole day without paying an entry fee, with a gingerbread morning, an evening on Austin Street and a slow drive past the beach lights on the way home.

The Beach Lights Come Later

Christmas on the Beach is a free lighted drive-thru at Rockport Beach. The 2026 season's grand opening is Sunday, December 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Palapa. The lights come on at 6 p.m. each evening and stay on until 9 p.m. on weeknights, or 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The Cultural Arts District says the display runs through January 2.

The district also places the City of Rockport's Tropical Christmas on the first weekend in December. On this year's calendar, that weekend also has Dale Watson on Friday, December 4, a Free Family Saturday on December 5 and the beach grand opening on December 6. Check the city's own listing before you plan around Tropical Christmas.

Put it all together and the season builds in a clear order. Christmas in the District begins on November 20. Thanksgiving weekend brings a second gallery show. The first weekend in December adds the city celebration and the beach. December 12 brings most of it together downtown.

One More Market Weekend Before Christmas

Rockport Market Days returns December 18 through 20, the weekend before Christmas. If the November weekend was for browsing, December is the last chance for handmade gifts from local makers. On Saturday, December 19, the art center holds the last Free Family Saturday on its 2026 list. Both shows are still up through the holidays, "Standing Out" until January 3 and "The Big Wave!" until January 9.

If you followed the summer arts calendar downtown, the holiday season adds two gallery shows, three Friday concerts and the Austin Street lights. For more on the community itself, see our Islands of Rockport neighborhood guide.
